9am lectures are the scum of the earth. In fact 9am anything is scum. Why do mornings even exist right? I’m sure I’m not the only one with this opinion. Mornings are retched but they needn’t be. Here are a few tips and tricks that will help turn you into one of those chirpy morning people we all love to hate.
Ever wonder why you feel so groggy when your alarm goes off in the mornings even after a “sufficient” amount of sleep? Apparantly it’s because you’re being woken suddenly from a deep sleep. There are a variety of apps on the market that monitor your activity as you sleep and their algorythms are subsequently able to determine when you are in a state of deep sleep. The advantage of this is that these apps also come with built in alarms which wake you gently over a period of time rather than slapping you in the face at 7am as you dream of your ultimate crush. The result is that you should in theory wake up feeling fresher. I personally have been using Sleep Cycle on iOS for the past 4 years and love it. Give it a shot and let me know how you feel when you wake up.
This might be the most obvious thing anyone will ever tell you but how many of us wake up and leave our curtains drawn even though our biological clocks rely on light. As with all other species of animal our circadian rhythm is stimulated by light and darkness so getting in as much natural light in the morning is essential to kick start the wakey wakey process.
Have you ever felt energised after listening to an absolute tuuune? Music not only has the power to improve your mood it can also help you feel like you’re raring to go. Upbeat music will especially make your body want to move and cause you to involuntarily quicken your pace. High tempo music can also cause your heart rate to increase which is exactly the opposite of what your body will be doing when in a sleepy state.
This isn’t so much about getting up or waking up but rather staying up. Breakfast is apparently the most important meal of the day, and not without good reason. The benefits of a good breakfast are well documented and by breakfast I don’t mean a cup of coffee and a couple of biscuits. Make sure you allow yourself enough time in the mornings to have something substanstive that will kick start your metabolism for the day and help you sustain your focus during the first couple of morning lectures.
So there you have a few pointers to help you get your lazy ass out of bed in the mornings. Of course all else failing, you obviously aren’t getting enough sleep so turn down that student night and shut those dreary eyes that little bit earlier next time.
